Incontinence
About 12 million people in the US are suffering from incontinence – 65% of them are women..
There are 4 main types of incontinence:
- Stress incontinence is common in women
and is involuntary leakage of urine with exertion, sneezing or
coughing.
- Urge incontinence occurs when the
need to urinate comes on quickly and patients have difficulty
holding their urine until they can reach a toilet.
- Overflow incontinence is constant
dripping of urine resulting form overfilled bladder. Patients
feel that they can’t empty their bladder completely and
often strain to urinate. Overflow incontinence occurs frequently
in men and can be caused by an enlarged prostate blocking the
urinary flow.
- Functional incontinence occurs when patients with normal urine control have trouble making it to the bathroom on time. This can be a result of arthritis or other diseases that cause decreased mobility.
A sad fact for women in particular, is that only half of all affected will seek treatment. Many feel ashamed of the condition and attempt to hide the problem. The psychological effects of ignoring incontinence can take a devastating toll.
